Festive food drive begins this weekend at the Blackburn Game
Charity walk organised for 7th December
Leeds United Supporters’ Trust and The Square Ball have joined forces in the run up to Christmas to provide some additional support to the Leeds Fans Foodbank by aiming to collect tons of food and raise much needed funds. The Leeds Fans Foodbank umbrellas both Leeds North West and Leeds South East foodbanks who provide emergency food supplies to people in crisis and at this time of year the colder weather heaps on additional pressure and increasingly families are unable to cover the basic costs of living such as heating bills, food and other essentials, meaning they’re often choosing between heating or eating.
This Saturday (9th Nov), the Leeds Fans Foodbank will kick start their festive food drive by asking fans to donate the essential items needed in the run up to the Christmas including: Fruit Juice, Long Life Milk, Tins of fish / tomatoes / potatoes & vegetables, Mash/Smash, Custard, Pasta Sauce, Coffee and fans can also make donations of festive products such as mince pies, advent calendars and Christmas Cake Etc. The food collection point on match days is outside the East Stand, just by the Bremner statue and starts from around two hours before Kick-off. (1pm on a normal match day).
To help provide the Foodbank with enough supplies over the festive season and in addition to the normal match day collections The Trust and The Square Ball are arranging a fun festive walk to coincide with the Huddersfield v Leeds game on Saturday 7th December, setting off from Elland Road at around 6am across to the John Smiths Stadium. The walk is roughly 13 miles taking around five hours to complete with breaks in between. The walk also has the support of the Huddersfield Town Supporters’ Trust will also be joining in to raise funds for their own local foodbank collection.
The purpose of the walk is to raise funds and collect donations to ensure the Leeds Fans Foodbank have enough meals to donate emergency food parcels right across the festive period at what will be the toughest time of the year for some of these families. The aim is to raise £10k in addition to the £3k already raised on the just giving page and collect over 5000 meals, any volunteers taking part in the walk are asked to aim to get £100 sponsorship per person https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/leedsfansfoodbank. If this is something you’d like to volunteer for then email email@example.com and more information will be provided in due course.
Trish Ryder, Leeds North and West Foodbank commented “We’re really pleased to get the help and support of Leeds United Fans again this Christmas, last year was a great success and with December being our busiest month all the donations you provide could really make the difference to some people having to choose between heating or eating.”
Leeds United Supporters’ Trust Commented “We’re pleased to once again launch the festive food drive with Leeds Fans Foodbank to generate extra support at this time of year, our generous supporters have already donated over 1500 meals this season, but in the run up to Christmas the foodbanks expect to see an increase in emergency food parcels so we need to do more. We’re pleased to be able to get all fans involved by doing a charity walk to try and raise more awareness and collect more funds. If every Leeds United fan attending the game brought at least one food item that would see the foodbanks have enough product for the entire festive period.”
